Figuring It All Out
“You have time” was the biggest lie I ever got told growing up. It wasn’t until college when I really started to internalize this belief and realize the importance of getting things done sooner than later. Having a bias for action. Life only seems to move faster and faster as you get older and that means there is less and less time to do the things you want. The idea that “you have time” inherently contradicts the reality that time is finite. You are unconsciously giving yourself permission to schedule whatever it may be for a later date. This has never served me well in life and I would bet it hasn’t you either. There is no harm in starting today.
This leads me into my next point about leaning into curiosity. As children, we naturally lean into curiosities without hesitation. We play with it, ask questions, and learn all we can without the intent to really achieve anything. I think it’s important we don’t lose that as we get older. From my experience, it makes life stale and holds us back when we stop fufilling the things that get us excited.
Whatever it may be, Read about it, talk to people about it, or try it out for yourself. Whatever it may be, make sure it’s action and forward momentum. Invite the the discomfort of doing something new into your life. I’ve been trying to be better about this and so far this year, I’ve been able to build a web app, make a YouTube video, start learning how to swim, written a newsletter every week, took a spontaneous trip to Boston, all while finishing up school and preparing for a big shift in life. I made a promise to myself this year to have a bias for action and to have confidence in my abilities to do the things that I want and live the story that I want.
Each and every day, I still have to make the choice to think and act this way. Some days it’s easy and others it’s a battle. But I think that’s the nature of growth and where you need to rely more so on discipline rather than motivation. You just need to start. Lean into curiosity. Lean into action. And trust that momentum will take you further than waiting ever will.
